Elation Unveils Brighter, Smaller, More Energy-Efficient Moving Head
With Revolutionary Philips MSD Platinum 5R Lamp Technology
LOS ANGELES – Visitors to Elation Professional’s 2009 LDI Show booth saw the future, and it’s brighter. And smaller, and faster, and more energy-efficient.
The future of the entertainment lighting industry was on display in the Elation booth, as the company unveiled the Platinum Spot 5R, a revolutionary moving head that utilizes groundbreaking new MSD Platinum 5R Lamp Technology from Philips.
Billed as the “next generation in entertainment lighting,” Platinum lamps combine Philips MSD technology with a very compact/short arc, compact design, innovative reflector system and high efficiency. This exciting new 160W/ 7,950 lumen discharge lamp source makes it possible to create fixtures that are brighter and more powerful with superior light quality, yet are also faster, smaller, lighter weight, draw much less energy, and have longer-lasting lamps.
Case in point -- Elation’s Platinum Spot 5R blasts an output comparable to a 575-watt fixture, yet it’s half the size, uses less than half the energy, and – amazingly – weighs half as much as a typical 250-watt fixture! To look at the Platinum Spot 5R in comparison to a 250-watt fixture, it not only weighs 50% less, but produces twice the output, while using 25% less energy and measuring 2/3 the size of a 250-watter. The Platinum Spot 5R also moves faster than traditional moving heads on pan and tilt, as well as on color/gobo changes.
The Platinum lamp’s integrated reflector system provides perfect lamp alignment and a new optical system each time the lamp is replaced. Additionally, its 2,000-hour rated lamp life is twice as long as that of a conventional 575-watt fixture, and when the time does come to replace the lamp, users will find that it’s much more affordable compared to other MSD replacement lamps.

Along with its cutting-edge Philips lamp technology, the DMX-compatible Platinum Spot 5R offers a full complement of professional design features, including 8 vibrant dichroic colors; 22 gobos (8 rotating/indexing, 14 static); 3-Facet Rotating Prism effect; Variable Frost (which allows it to function as a hybrid spot/wash); Motorized Iris; Motorized Focus; Variable Speed Shutter/Strobe; and 0-100% Mechanical Dimmer. Operating on 16 DMX channels, the Platinum Spot 5R has a 540° (630° optional) pan and 265° tilt and a beam angle of 17°.
Much more compact that the traditional 575-watt moving head, the Platinum Spot 5R measures 14.25”L x 13.25”W x 17.75”H and weighs just 28.6 lbs. The fixture outputs 322 foot candles at 16’ and draws 350 watts total power average when the lamp is on and all of the fixture’s motors are moving.
The MSRP of the Platinum Spot 5R is $2,799.95. The first units are scheduled to start shipping in February 2010.
