After updating my fixtures' firmware, DMX output is inconsistent. What should I do?
Firmware updates can sometimes affect how fixtures respond to DMX data—especially if your controller or software hasn’t been updated accordingly.
If you experience erratic behavior after a firmware update:
- Double-check all DMX addresses and mode settings
- Confirm proper cabling and DMX termination
- Test the fixture in a known-good DMX chain or with a different controller
- If needed, roll back to a previous firmware version
Refer to the fixture’s manual or contact Elation technical support for compatibility guidance.
The first fixture in my DMX chain keeps failing. What's causing this?
Repeated failures of the first fixture in a DMX line may be caused by:
- Voltage spikes, drops, or improper grounding
- Incorrect or missing DMX termination
- Static discharge or electrical interference at the input
We recommend using DMX isolators or surge protectors—especially in high-risk environments—and ensuring the entire DMX line is properly terminated and grounded.
What are GDTF files and where can I find them for Elation fixtures?
GDTF stands for General Device Type Format, an open standard developed to ensure consistent, accurate fixture data across lighting control platforms.
Elation supports this format to help designers, programmers, and operators integrate our fixtures seamlessly with consoles and previsualization software that support GDTF.
What’s included in a GDTF file?
- DMX channel layout and traits
- 3D geometry for visualizers
- Physical and electrical specs
- Dynamic behavior (e.g., gobo indexing, color mixing curves)
Where can I download Elation GDTF files?
All available Elation GDTF files are hosted on the official GDTF Share platform:
👉 Elation GDTF Library on GDTF-Share.com
What if my fixture isn't listed?
- New GDTF files are added regularly, but if a specific model isn’t listed, you can build your own using the GDTF Builder tool.
- You can also refer to the fixture’s DMX chart in the user manual to manually create a profile for your console if needed.
Which lighting consoles support GDTF?
GDTF is currently supported by:
- MA3 (grandMA3)
- Obsidian ONYX (via future implementation)
- Vectorworks Vision
- Other visualizers and emerging platforms
